SONC Suspends Events Through June 30

June 4, 2020 by Roman

Special Olympics Northern California (SONC) has made the difficult decision to suspend all practices, events, competitions and activities through June 30, 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic. This includes the cancelation of all spring sports and the 2020 Summer Games.

“While these decisions are heartbreaking for our entire Special Olympics community, they are critical to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus and protect the health & safety of everyone involved with Special Olympics Northern California,” said David Solo, president and CEO of SONC. “Our mission and dedication to individuals with intellectual disabilities remain as strong as ever.”

The cancelations will impact thousands of Special Olympics athletes who annually compete in swimming, track and field, tennis, volleyball and bocce each spring. The Summer Games, also canceled for 2020, is SONC’s largest annual competition and is held each year at the University of California, Davis.

To help keep athletes and supporters active and engaged without events, SONC has developed a new Healthy Athletes® online program:  Health & Fitness @ Home. The Health & Fitness @ Home program is designed for the Special Olympics community to stay healthy, motivated and connected. The program will feature daily activities, exercise videos, health tips, expert advice and a push for interaction between athletes – all through a Facebook page and online. SONC Health & Fitness @ Home will launch on March 30, 2020.
