Special Olympics Ambassadors Represent on Capitol Hill

March 31, 2017 by Roman

Athletes and representatives from Special Olympics Northern California joined delegates from around the country in a visit to Washington D.C. this month to meet with government leaders and advocate on behalf of Special Olympics.

Special Olympics Global Ambassadors Lindsay Mibach and Stephanie Ching joined Special Olympics Northern California COO Ilisa Kessler on Capitol Hill to meet with the offices of: Congresswoman Jackie Speier; Congresswoman Anna Eshoo; Congressman Jeff Denham; Congressman Eric Swalwell; Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren; Congressman David Valadao; and Congressman and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

The delegation was also joined at a private dinner event by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, who attended to hear first-hand from athletes, partners, family members, and SOI and program leadership on the impact Special Olympics has made on their lives and why continued federal support is critical to the work in education and schools. Secretary DeVos attended at the invitation of Special Olympics and Chairman Tim Shriver. This was the first time a current U.S. Secretary of Education has participated in Hill Day.
