With more than 75 years of combined experience in Special Olympics, the Team NorCal bocce team is ready and prepared for the upcoming USA Games this June in Minnesota.
But for the four athletes and coach from the South Bay, USA Games represents more than just a chance to compete at the national level. It’s about the journey and enjoying the once-in-a-lifetime moments together.
“The main goal for my team is going to be to have fun,” said Coach Stefanie, whose brother, Anthony, is an athlete on the team. “It doesn’t matter if we win or lose, we’re going to have a great time.”
And the athletes echoed their coach’s feeling.
“Win & have fun,” said Johan.
“Play good and have fun,” added Anthony.
It’s About the Journey

The USA Games trip will last more than a week for Team NorCal and include a number of events and activities, both on and off the court.
On the court, Coach Stefanie is eager to see the competitions and the variety of sports happening in one place.
“I’m looking forward to going to USA Games to see other athletes compete from all across the country,” she said. “And to check out other sports that we do not have in NorCal.”
For the athletes, some of the most exciting things are happening away from the court. When asked what they are looking forward to most, answers ranged from the food and dorms to the flight, Healthy Athletes, seeing the lakes and multiple nods to Mall of America.
A Special Honor

As the only bocce team representing Special Olympics Northern California, the squad is appreciative and understands the incredible opportunity that they’ve earned.
“I’m excited to be representing NorCal in Minnesota,” said Trisha.
“It feels good,” said Courtney. “It feels great.”
Johan summed it up well:
“I feel honored,” said Johan. “We’re one of a select few. It makes us feel special.”
