April is National Volunteer Month — a time to recognize the people who show up, give their time, and make a difference in their communities.
At Special Olympics Northern California, volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. We don’t need a reminder to appreciate them.

But we’re glad to have a reason to say it out loud:
None of this happens without you.
More than 23,000 volunteers support Special Olympics programs across Northern California. They’re at tracks and gyms, basketball courts and bocce fields, swim meets and golf courses and finish lines. They help set up events, clean after competitions, hand out water, and stay until the very end to make sure every athlete has the experience they deserve.
Through it all, they cheer on athletes for their bravery, effort, and skill.
But the visible stuff is only part of it. The moments that matter most are harder to see – like an athlete crossing a finish line for the first time, looking up to find someone wildly clapping for their great achievement. Or the coach-athlete relationship that quietly deepens over a season and then grows further in the next one.
Those moments stay with people. Special Olympics NorCal volunteers make them happen.
Why Volunteering With Special Olympics Feels Different

Special Olympics NorCal is built on a simple but powerful idea: that inclusion matters. Everyone deserves the chance to participate, to belong, and to be celebrated.
When you volunteer here, you’re not filling a shift. You’re stepping into a community that believes in that idea and shows up to make it real. A community where athletes remember your name, families trust you, coaches and fellow volunteers who keep coming back because they’ve found something so rewarding and joyful.
What You Get Back

Volunteering with Special Olympics NorCal is about more than just giving your time. And it rarely feels one-sided.
Watching an athlete compete with everything they have, with no ego or hesitation, just full effort and joy, can have a profound way of reshaping how you think about perseverance, sportsmanship and hard work.
You build friendships here that can be harder to find elsewhere. Friendships with athletes, with families, and with other volunteers who show up for the same reasons you do. And whether you’re coaching, running events, or supporting behind the scenes, you’re developing real skills — leadership, communication, problem-solving — that carry into your career, your relationships, and every other part of your life.
Most of all, you become part of someone’s story. A cheer, a high five, a few words you provide at the right moment: athletes carry those things with them long after the event ends.
That’s the kind of impact you can have as a volunteer for Special Olympics NorCal.
Ways to Get Involved

There’s a role here for just about everyone at Special Olympics NorCal, whether you have a single day to give or you’re looking for something ongoing.
- Single-Day Event Volunteers: From Spring Games and Fall Games to Bike the Bridges and Polar Plunge, our calendar runs year-round. No experience is needed — sign up, show up, and be part of an awesome day.
- Coaches: Coaching is one of the most impactful ways to get involved. You’ll work directly with athletes to build skills and confidence, and go for the gold. It’s a bigger commitment, but for many volunteers, it becomes the most meaningful part of their week.
- Unified Partners: In Unified Sports, athletes with and without intellectual disabilities compete on the same team. As a Unified Partner, you’re not on the sideline — you’re right in the action, competing alongside athletes and building real relationships through shared experience.
- Medical and Health & Wellness Volunteers: Healthcare professionals and wellness-focused volunteers support athlete health at events and through our ongoing wellness programs, including health screenings and Healthy Athletes events.
- Office and Administrative Support: Not every role is on the field. Behind every great event is a team handling logistics, communications, and the operational details that make it all run.

Getting Started
For single-day events, browse the volunteer calendar, register, and show up. It really is that simple.
For ongoing roles like coaching or Unified Sports, you’ll complete a short application and background check. If you’re not sure which direction fits, that’s fine — there’s a place for you here, and we’ll help you find it.
