Coaches Education System (CES) Training School Clinician Job Description
Special Olympics Northern California (SONorCal) is looking for clinicians to lead sport-specific training schools for volunteer coaches in sports offered by SONorCal. Clinicians will be responsible for ensuring that the 2-4 hour training school prepares attendees to properly manage a practice site and teach the fundamentals of the specific sport in preparation for Regional and Championship competitions.
Clinicians will be responsible for:
- Effectively communicating with clinic attendees about the contents of the clinic.
- Conveying the mission of Special Olympics throughout the clinic.
- Working with SONorCal Staff to prepare materials for the clinic.
- Working with SONorCal Staff and the selected facility to prepare for the clinic.
- Welcoming attendees to clinic.
- Explaining requirements for becoming certified.
- Teaching the fundamentals of the specific sport, including warming up, basic and advanced skills and sharing or referring to other resources.
- Teaching fundamentals of how to organize a safe and effective practice, including basic and advanced drills and fun ways to keep athletes engaged.
- Understanding the rules of the sport (both National Governing Body (NGB) and SONorCal modifications).
- Answering questions of participants about rules and different ways to approach trainings.
- Giving participants materials and tools to take back to their practice sites.
Possible ways to qualify to become a SONorCal CES Clinician:
- Current Special Olympics sport coaching experience of five years or longer.
- Current Special Olympics Coach Certification in the sport.
- Current or previous sport coaching experience of three years or more at the Middle School level or above.
- Current or previous experience playing the sport competitively at the College level or above.
- Current or previous officiating experience in the sport of five years or longer.
- Current or previous experience leading coach training within the sport for Special Olympics or another sports organization.
- Certified training within the sport through the NGB or other recognized organization covering the sport.
- Recommendation from a SONorCal Sports Staff member or Area Director.

Application Process
- Complete the online application at SONorCal Coaches Education System Clinician Application.
- Complete a verbal interview with local sports contact (SONorCal Staff or Area Director).
- Receive approval from SONorCal Staff to become a certified CES clinician.
Once Approved
- You will be added to the SONorCal CES Clinicians database for future clinics.
- SONorCal Staff will reach out to you for clinic opportunities.
You may conduct a CES Clinic after clearing it through your SONorCal Sports Contact and completing a CES Clinic Registration/Notification Form.
