
Calling all champions! The countdown is on for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, set for June 20-26, 2026 in Minnesota.
USA Games will unite 3,000 elite athletes, 1,500 coaches, 10,000 volunteers, and 75,000 fans from all 50 states for a world-class display of athleticism and will.
Special Olympics NorCal will be sending a delegation of nine teams, 56 athletes, 12 unified partners, and 20 coaches to the prestigious gathering of skilled individuals and supporters.
In addition to exciting sports action in 16 different team and individual sports, USA Games will feature event highlights like the Law Enforcement Torch Run, the Opening Ceremonies Parade of Athletes, a Healthy Athletes Experience, and a Fan Zone with fun daily programming.
Held every four years, USA Games is more than just an event — it’s a triumph of the human spirit, and an inclusive stage where greatness knows no limits.
The 2026 Special Olympics USA Games will celebrate ability and build a lasting legacy of positive change. Through the power of sports and inclusion, the USA Games will help transform lives and communities across the country and around the world.
All About Team NorCal
In advance of each USA Games, Special Olympics NorCal athletes, Unified Partners, and coaches are selected to make up the Special Olympics NorCal delegation. The 2026 delegation will collectively represent 40+ counties throughout Northern California.

Team NorCal athletes will be competing for gold in a wide range of sports:

Athletes and coaches are hard at work now, training for their upcoming events, and will gather at a team Training Camp at the end of the month. They are putting in great effort at practices and workouts, tapping into their spirits of determination and bravery as they prepare to compete.
A common goal? Giving their all for the chance to bring home the gold.
A History of USA Games
Founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the first Special Olympics games took place in 1968 at Soldier Field in Chicago. More than 1,000 athletes participated in the inaugural games, kick-starting a massive worldwide movement. In the 50+ years since, Special Olympics has grown into an international phenomenon touching millions of lives around the globe.
The Special Olympics USA Games have been held since the 1990s, with Minneapolis-St. Paul serving as the host city in 1991 – bringing a nice full circle moment to the 2026 USA Games.
In recent years, the 2022 USA Games held in Orlando, FL recognized cheerleading as a competitive sport for the first time. The 2018 USA Games in Seattle introduced stand-up paddleboarding, and the 2014 USA Games in Newark, NJ held the first triathlon.
In 2026, cornhole and pickleball will make their USA Games debuts in Minnesota.
